A few weeks ago I found out I had won the lottery. Not "Pick Six," but the lottery for one of forty 10 x 10 plots in Chatham's first attempt at a Community Garden. After years of dealing with deer decimating anything not doused with a concoction of hot pepper, rotten eggs and coyote pee, chipmunks creating a personal habitrail beneath my flower beds, and my dogs cutting trails through my tomatoes, the idea of gardening within the confines of a fenced-in, pest free, full-sun environnment was extremely appealing.
Today, along with friends and co-gardeners Jill and Ian, we make our first offical visit to the plot to devise our garden strategy. The timing could be better, as I am recovering from a yoga-induced neck injury and can barely lift a trowel, let alone a bag of mulch, but that's why it's good to have a 6' 3" volunteer firefighter on your team. (Thanks Ian).
In addition to scoping out the plot, we get to meet our plot-mate, Stan. This worries me a bit, as he's already reached out to me via email reporting on drainage issues, soil composition, and the abundance of grass clogs, so it would seem his gardening aptitude is much greater than mine. Not sure what he'll make of a bunch of garden novices along with our combined four kids running amuck around the plot. Stay tuned....
